Environment Challenge: Day 2

Kind of forgot about this for awhile. I think I'm just going to do the challenge whenever I feel like because that way I'll feel way less pressured. The theme for this painting was swamp!

Painting Dump: Frozen Speed Painting

I've been trying out a number of speed paintings in order to get better at colour and light and whatnot. They're both studies of screenshots from Frozen because Elsa is too fun to paint and I love painting whirlwinds of snow around her!

Painting Dump: Roald Dahl Inspired Daily Doodles

Recently DailyDoodle on Twitter did a Roald Dahl week! I'm a major fan of his books so I participated in three of the five days, and did illustrations for Matilda, James and The Giant Peach and The BFG. It gave me a great excuse to make use of a load of brushes I'd never tried before!

The Discovery

I haven't had a lot of time to update this blog recently! I filled in as a temp in an office so finding painting time was difficult (take this painting above, which took me a week which is way longer than I usually take when painting traditional). A lot of my stuff recently has been fan art so I'm attempting to do some more original illustrations. This one is just inspired by the idea of exploring and finding new lands (even though the perspective is screwy), my current WIP is based on an idea I had of a young warrior girl who has to rescue her parents, I was originally making her a viking but now I'm toying with the idea of a member of a Mongolian tribe.

Environment Challenge: Day 1

Yesterday's theme was Waterfall. I'm really hoping that this challenge will give me the opportunity to get better at painting backgrounds as I'm kind of shabby at them. I got a chance to try a load of brushes that I wouldn't normally use. It's not amazing but my aim is that both my painting skills and my environments will be much better once I'm finished this challenge.

Frozen Illustrations

I've been wanting to do a series of gouache paintings like this for awhile, I'm still learning gouache but I don't think that they turned out too bad. Both paintings available to buy as prints, pillows, phone cases, etc from my new Society6 account here

I don't even like this anymore but I figured I should still post it. I wanted to attempt a more painterly approach rather than everything being so linear but I don't think it worked out. I'll hopefully get better.

From tomorrow on I will be beginning an environment challenge that I found on Tumblr. I'm hoping that it will improve my digital painting. I'll be taking my time with each painting, properly planning out my thumbnails and palette and whatnot, in hope that I will begin to show signs of improvement.
